Your vault is stored locally on your device with zero-knowledge encryption.This is a security feature, not a bug. However, it means we cannot and will not recover your data under any circumstances.

We CANNOT recover your vault if:

• You lose BOTH your PIN and recovery phrase (12 words)
• Your device is lost, stolen, or damaged (without iCloud backup or Protocol S Sync)
• You delete the app without backing up to iCloud
• Your recovery phrase is lost or destroyed
• iOS Keychain corruption (rare, but possible)
• You restore your device to factory settings without iCloud backup

You are responsible for securing your recovery phrase.

During onboarding, you will generate a BIP-39 recovery phrase (12 words). This phrase is the ONLY way to recover your vault if you forget your PIN.

We recommend:

• Write down your recovery phrase on paper (never screenshot it)
• Store it in a secure physical location (safe, bank deposit box)
• Enable iCloud Backup (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Backup)
• Storing backups in cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive) if you trust those providers
• Keeping your master password in a secure password manager

Your recovery phrase is the ONLY way to restore your vault.If you lose your PIN, you can use your 12-word recovery phrase to reset access. If you lose both your PIN and recovery phrase, your vault is permanently inaccessible.

This is not a limitation we can fix. It is a fundamental consequence of zero-knowledge encryption. Your recovery phrase is never transmitted to us, never stored by us, and mathematically impossible for us to recover.

Write down your recovery phrase during onboarding. Store it in a secure physical location. Do not screenshot it. Do not store it in Notes or iCloud. Do not rely on memory alone.

Free users: Your vault is local-only. Entries are stored only on your device and included in your standard iCloud device backup.

Sanctuary Key users (Premium): You can enable Protocol S Sync, which syncs your encrypted entries to YOUR private iCloud container via CloudKit. This enables automatic sync across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Important: Even with Protocol S Sync enabled, entries are encrypted BEFORE upload. We never see your data—it goes directly to your iCloud. If you lose your recovery phrase, we cannot decrypt your synced entries.

Whispering Thoughts is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to:

• Warranties of merchantability
• Fitness for a particular purpose
• Non-infringement
• Data integrity
• Uninterrupted operation

Use at your own risk. Ekoche Studios is not liable for:

• Data loss or corruption
• Emotional distress
• Lost productivity
• Hardware or software damage
• Any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages

While Whispering Thoughts uses zero-knowledge encryption and collects no telemetry, it is not designed to protect you from legal or forensic investigation.

If law enforcement seizes your device:

• They can see that Whispering Thoughts is installed
• They can see that vault.db exists
• They cannot decrypt your vault without your password (AES-256-GCM is military-grade)
• However, if compelled by law, you may be required to provide your password

Do not use Whispering Thoughts to store information that could incriminate you in illegal activity.This software is designed for personal reflection, not criminal conspiracy.

Anything you write in The Void is gone forever when you close it.There is no undo. No recovery. No cache. No backup.

The Void is designed for catharsis, not record-keeping. If you want to keep something, write it in a regular entry, not The Void.

Whispering Thoughts is Windows-only. There are no plans for macOS, iOS, Android, or Linux versions.

If you switch to a non-Windows device, you will need to export your vault to PDF (Lifetime feature) or manually copy/paste entries before migrating.
